In a world filled with dirt pedals, the ProCo RAT has always stood out by harnessing its own unique and gnarly distortion tones. General Guitar Gadgets hit the nail on the head with their ProCo Rat clone, the Rodentand I was lucky enough to get my hands on one. Aside from the kits, General Guitar Gadgets is kind enough to share various free schematics and all sorts of help when it comes to the DIY pedal and amp building world.
Like I mentioned, I was given the chance to put one of these Rodents together, and I wanted to share my experience with you. To be honest, I was a bit nervous at first. I have done my fair share of small pedal modifications, in fact, here are a few of the Boss DS-1 mods I have done. The GGG kit provides an unpopulated circuit board, all of the necessary components, and an unpainted pedal enclosure.
You could say I was a bit overwhelmed at first. Thankfully, General Guitar Gadgets provided a detailed, online instruction manual that was able to walk me through every step of the way, which made putting this beast together rather easy. Honestly, with intermediate soldering skills, their helpful instructions, and the tools you need to build a DIY guitar pedalI believe that anybody could take on one of the GGG kits.
This pedal kicks ass! It gives just the right amount of distortion needed in order to make some huge, heavy rock tones — without getting lost in the mix in a live setting. I am currently pushing it into a Marshall JCM and it sounds massive.
The General Guitar Gadgets Rodent immediately smacks you with that fat distortion that we have all grown to love from the original RAT. The tone or Filter knob gives this pedal a world of versatility — ranging from low-end thick tones that will be sure to shake the paintings off the wall, to high-end screaming tones that will wake up everyone in a ten-mile radius.
This versatility explains why so many world-famous guitarists choose the RAT when searching for distortion pedals — and the Rodent stands right there with it. However, the OP07 OpAmp that comes with the kit kicks out some massive distortion tones as well. I have compared both the LM and the OP07, and both sound fantastic. In terms of both tone and build difficulty. This pedal has provided the exact tone I have been looking for, and putting it together was a walk in the park.

It's makes such a massive sound for such a tiny box. Aug 12, 5. Messages: 1, The white face RAT reissue is the one to get. If you want lots of options to configure your tone, probably the alpha dog. Aug 12, 6. Messages: 2, I'd say just get an actual RAT as well, you really can't go wrong with them, and they are very inexpensive. Even if you are searching for a vintage one, you can usually find it cheaper than many clones.

Jules-RMAug 12, As an owner of a big box vintage RI Rat, I too have wondered this. I hate the switch on mine and wish it had an LED. Otherwise, its a fantastic pedal -- super versatile and cheap.Log in or Sign up. The Gear Page.

Messages: I'm starting to despise video demos. All of those demos make the FKR sound I dunno, passable. Apr 24, 4. The Rat is one of the simplest circuits out there and quite easy to mod on your own. Everything in there can be modded to induce some sort of change Jay DoyleApr 24, Apr 24, 5. Basically, you take a clipping diode out of the circuit, replacing it with a 3-way switch, with each position offering a different clipping scenario.
The middle position has nothing in it's path, so all you get is clipping from the LMN if your's has that chip - this position has a big volume boost since there is less clipping happening than a normal RAT good for low gain stuff.
The last position has 2 clipping diodes I forget which ones off the top of my head which I believe is the Original RAT sound. That's the side I use the most.
It's darker and mushier than the other positions, but then again, so am I. It also involved some cap and resistor changes. My opinion: I like it! Although, I liked it well enough before the mods too. Apr 25, 6. Thanks guys Mullet Kingdom, do you have a FKR Anybody gonna step up for the Keeley RAT???

This pedal is a clone of one on my favorite effects pedals from the 80's It's a basic OpAmp distortion pedal using the classic LMN IC chip that is a fairly simple build for those handy with a soldering gun, have a free weekend, and love rock-n-roll. The layout we are using was designed by Francisco Pena who has done an excellent job with this and other pedal designs on Tonepad.
The PCBs on tonepad. I recommend going this direction if you want as close to error free build as possible. You can buy the majority if not all of the parts from Small Bear Electronics which offers pretty reasonable prices and are supporters of TonePad and several other DIY music project sites. Also recommended! I created the graphics in Adobe Illustrator and have made it available below to all that wish to use it. It is a PDF file saved out of Illustrator so it is easily edited with any vector graphic software that can open pdf's I'll post some sound clips and maybe some video soon to give you an idea what it can do.
Now lets get ready to Rat-n-Roll Did you use this instructable in your classroom? Add a Teacher Note to share how you incorporated it into your lesson. The PDF file has the parts list along with the circuit board layout. This is not a RatShack project so you will have to order online from Small Bear Electronics or another reputable electronic parts dealer such as DigikeyMouseror MCMinone if you are not lucky enough to live in a city with a decent electronic parts store.
Audiophile types frown upon using NTE parts for high-end projects such as amplifier rebuilds do to inconsistencies in part specs but for projects like this I haven't had any problems so far. In addition to the parts listed in the PDF file, you will also need: - Qty. Check the web. Hammond cases are the most popular. I found mine at my local electronics part dealer. There are several instructables and tutorials on the web on how to etch boards using the toner transfer method so I won't go into much detail here.Hyperendemic definition
I have found my tried and true method so you will have to experiment to find what works for you. All FedexOffice's have this printer in there express area at least at the time of this writing and it lays down a heavy black coat of toner perfect for this process. The copiers especially the Canon's are horrible for this so I stick to what works. Once you have your negative reversed image then you are ready to iron it on to the copper. I alway clean the board with fine steel wool 00 or and then wipe it down with alcohol right before I begin to get the best adhesion of the tone to the copper.
In these pictures I am etching several boards to use in later projects. Place your image face down and with the iron set to nearly the highest cotton setting no steam lay the iron in the middle for a few seconds to melt the toner. This will tack it to the copper and stop it from sliding around as you begin to iron and apply more pressure. I generally work with the point of the iron moving from the center outwards, turning the board as I go.
The process usually takes only 5 minutes of firm ironing until it is ready. With this paper I can see the toner outline coming through when it is almost ready.
When the paper starts to buckle I start massaging it to gently loosen it up until it starts to peel. The goal now is to remove all the paper from the exposed copper. It isn't important to remove all the paper stuck to the toner traces just as long as there is no paper blocking any holes or bridging anything.
